Washington--Queen Latifah, Jessica Simpson and Jay Leno weren't the only stars assembled at the recent White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) Dinner. A plethora of glittering jewels also made it past security, shimmering from the wrists and ears of everyone from the first lady, Michelle Obama, to guests such as Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss. The annual dinner, held this year on May 1 at the Washington Hilton, brings together the White House press corps and Washington politicos to honor professional recipients of the WHCA's journalism awards and to raise money for scholarships. A longtime D.C. tradition, the dinner also includes performances from the celebrity set--and increasingly, it seems--lots of jewelry. True to her style-icon status, Michelle Obama stepped out in a red, off-the-shoulder gown by Prabal Gurung paired with an assemblage of eye-catching jewelry, including stacked cuff bracelets and long drop earrings. Together the pieces featured an artful mix of textures and materials, including yellow gold, white bakelite, diamonds and gemstones. Sitting atop the first lady's wrist was a hand-hammered cuff in 18-karat yellow gold from Sutra Jewels highlighted at the center by a 10-carat raspberry tourmaline and flanked by rose-cut diamonds in a star-burst motif. Stacked right above--in the way fashion designers have been styling cuffs on the runway--was Bochic's white bakelite cuff featuring gold filigree and diamond inlay. Also from Bochic, the first lady donned a tourmaline and rose-cut diamond ring, plus carved tourmaline earrings inset with white bakelite and rose-cut diamonds. The stacking trend was going strong at the dinner, with singer Simpson wearing stacked bangles from Amrapali, plus long drop earrings and a cocktail ring, and Oscar-winning director Kathyrn Bigelow wearing Boucheron's stacked "Ava" bracelets and "Gabrielle" earrings, all in white gold with diamonds. Meanwhile, singer and actress Latifah may have appeared to be wearing dozens of stacked diamond bangles, but her wrist accouterment was in fact a single design, the "Everlon Diamond Knot Cuff" by Timothy Snell for Zales, a piece custom-designed specifically for Queen Latifah's chic black gown. Also dressed up in diamonds were comedian and late-night talk show host Chelsea Handler, Mad Men star Moss and production designer Eve Mavrakis, wife of actor Ewan McGregor. Handler selected diamond, onyx and platinum chandelier earrings and two cocktail rings from designer Neil Lane, while Moss looked to Lane for diamond and pearl drop earrings, plus a diamond, platinum and onyx cocktail ring. Mavrakis wore the designer's diamond and platinum long chain necklace. |
